Workshop 1 : How to curate and present your performance material to engage your audience with John Carty
Description
John Carty will outline his approach to creating a set list for either a performance or for an album. He believes putting together a great set list that really works can be a bit of an art form in itself. He will describe the structure of a set list and give valuable tips on how to keep the audience engaged as writing an entertaining set list is so much more than just choosing the order of your tracks. He will give tips on how to keep things interesting and vary the mood, how to communicate with your audience and create a natural flow to the event. He’ll also give some dos and don’ts whilst on stage or when recording an album.
John Carty is one of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians having been awarded the Irish Television station, TG4’s Traditional Musician of the Year in 2003.. Playing professionally for 30 years he has toured worldwide as a solo player, in duets notably with Matt Molloy and as part of John Carty’s Festival Band, At the Racket and as a member of super group, Patrick Street. John has performed on over twenty commercial recordings both on major record labels and on his own, Racket Records. He has also produced numerous albums.

Workshop 2: A Framework for Teaching Irish Traditional Music with Dr Liz Doherty
Description
Liz Doherty has discovered that a musician might be an amazing player – but that does NOT prepare you for teaching others. So she has developed a framework and a suite of tools for teaching traditional music – both for in person and online to help great musicians become great teachers. This module will share some of these skills with you and help you to re-imagine your skill set for delivering online. It will help you to find imaginative ways to articulate encouraging you to explore new and innovative ways of supporting learners at all stages of the journey.
Dr. Liz Doherty, education expert & award-winning teacher, is the creator and Director of I Teach Trad. Utilizing her unique skill set as an educator, performer, researcher, writer, music producer, arts consultant and entrepreneur, she has drawn on over 30 years of experience in traditional music to help great musicians become great teachers. Liz was recently recognised with a National Teaching Fellowship from the UK’s Higher Education Academy for her work in this field. She is currently a member of Culture Ireland’s Expert Advisory Committee.

Workshop 3 : Managing Yourself and Managing Your Workflow as a Professional Musician with Oisín Mac Diarmada
Description
In this workshop Oisín Mac Diarmada will outline his approach to being a professional Irish traditional musician and how he maintains a balance between the creative side and business side of your professional practice. He will talk about getting gigs as well as marketing and promotion of yourself. He will also give details of Trad Ireland, a newly-established entity to promote the traditional arts throughout the island of Ireland.
Oisín Mac Diarmada is the founder of the internationally-renowned group Téada in 2001, Oisín is also a regular solo performer and published ‘Fiddlers of Sligo Tunebook’ with fellow-Sligo musician Daithí Gormley. Oisín has toured frequently in recent years with noted singer/accordion-player Séamus Begley and his wife Samantha Harvey (piano/dance). Oisín also works as Director of SCT, the Traditional Irish Music Examination System administered by Comhaltas. In 2019 he established Trad Ireland with Tristan Rosenstock an entity to promote the traditional arts throughout the island of Ireland

Workshop 4: Funding Opportunities for Traditional Musicians with Maureen Carty
Description
Maureen Carty will outline the funding opportunities available from the Arts Council, local authorities, Network Ireland and others. She will also give details of other opportunities through the Percent for Art Scheme and Social Practice Projects which are open to all artists. She will also give advice on completing applications and where to seek help.
Maureen Carty has been very involved in many aspects of the traditional music market over the last 25 years. In conjunction with her husband John Carty, she runs and maintains a small record label, Racket Records which has to date fifteen titles in its catalogue. She was an adviser to the Arts Council Deis scheme from 2005-2012 advising traditional musicians on funding applications. For seven years she was co-ordinator, programmer and publicist of the Co Leitrim Traditional Band in residency scheme. More recently she was acting Project Manager of Creative Frame, an initiative of Leitrim Arts Office to provide information and professional development opportunities for anyone working in the creative industries in Leitrim and the surrounding counties.
